Nobel Peace Prize winner and palliative care doctor Michael Dworkind has recently gained attention for creating whimsical art made from up-cycled junk. “Unfortunately in our Canadian society we throw out so much good stuff,” Dworkind said.  “Garbage day in NDG is my heaven.” Some of his most original art pieces display faces constructed out of door stoppers, protective eyewear, and shower heads

In a recent interview, the retired physician expressed how he enjoys the genuine reactions that his work brings out of people, trying to interpret the art itself but also what it’s made of. “It’s humorous because people say things: ‘this comes from there, that from there; Ahh isn’t that funny.’ That’s the reaction I want.”- he stated.

Dworkind is the co-founder and medical director of Santé Cannabis, a resource centre for the use of medical marijuana in Quebec. In his earlier years he also worked as a member of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, which made him a Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1985. Now after retiring from a long and successful career of over 30 years, he’s fed into a hidden passion he’s had for decades, while also repurposing waste and doing his part to improve the conditions of his community and environment.

So, next time you’re going to dispose of something, think about how many other purposes it could have, and how many other places it could end up inbefore a landfill. “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”.
